Le grand voyage
Véronique, Stephen, Isabelle, Serge and Cédric go on an extraordinary voyage around the world. It takes them to Mongolia, the United States, Romania and Senegal, where they experience other cultures, customs and traditions. These five people are mentally challenged, taking part in a project that lets them discover the daily lives of indigenous people.
What happens when you take people considered abnormal to another part of the world, where abnormal may mean something else? This is the question asked by Liliana Dias in her documentary, filmed among the Roma in Romania, the Mongols in Mongolia, the Fula in Senegal and the Apache in the United States. An interesting way of approaching the issue of “handicap” by looking at its definition and putting the notion of the Other into perspective through extraordinary encounters. This very respectable project filmed over seven years nonetheless lacks strength. The director naturally focuses on her five subjects as they travel through different settings and cultures, but in the end, although undeniably interesting, the documentary remains somewhat superficial.
