L'étudiante et monsieur Henri

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

In search of a room in Paris so she can move from Orléans and the strict father who wants her to take over the family business, Constance finds one in Henri’s home. A crotchety old man, Henri soon turns out to be a terrible roommate. Taking advantage of her lack of money, he makes Constance a deal: three months’ free rent if she seduces his son Paul and takes him away from his girlfriend Valérie, whom Henri hates. A dangerous little game with unexpected consequences for everyone involved…

Claude Brasseur as a grumpy old fart, Guillaume De Tonquédec as a pathetic yuppie, Frédérique Bel as a dumb blonde: with such a lack of imagination in casting, how could L’Etudiante et Monsieur Henri not be terrible? After the forgettable and forgotten Irène, On va s’aimer and Une semaine sur deux (et la moitié des vacances scolaires), Ivan Calbérac refuses to give up by making yet another unnecessary phoned-in movie, reaching new lows in mediocrity in its first awful half hour. At least is gets somewhat better from there, mainly because Noémie Schmidt is nice to look at and begins to add depth to her character. Other than that, it's a completely superficial story with and ending that’s just plain dumb.
