When she learns she has breast cancer, Magda decides to focus on the positive. As she begins a long battle against the disease, taking care to protect her son, who is already weakened by the departure of his father, fate brings her Arturo. United by tragedy, Magda and Arturo gradually become closer as they cling to life.

After participating in a series of unnecessary big productions (Pirates of the Caribbean, Grimsby, Zoolander 2) and falsely prestigious films (I’m So Excited!, The Counselor, Nine) Penelope Cruz has finally returned to passionate cinema. Attached to the next film by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, the Oscar-winner has rediscovered her panache with Spanish director Julio Medem (Sex and Lucia), who offers her a big role on a platter. This movie reestablishes her energy and amazing beauty, which has never been better filmed than in Europe. Surrounded by a magnificent supporting cast, Cruz shines brightly, well served by the noble mise en scene, as well as an imaginative and infinitely sensitive director. Together they manage to transcend an otherwise fairly standard script.
