Ryan and Emily Fleeges move with their daughter Leila into a stylish new house in Palo Alto. In the garage, they find an old video camera and a box full of VHS tapes full of footage of the two young girls that used to live in the same house. The Fleeges soon realize that they can see paranormal phenomena through the camera, and that a mysterious entity is attacking Leila in the same way it went after the girls on the videos…

After four episodes and a Spanish spin-off, the Paranormal Activity franchise, launched by a film disguised as found footage in 2007 that became a spectacular phenomena, has announced this will be the last in the series. In 3D, with the usual special effects and revelations, there is just enough creepiness to satisfy fans of the original. The editor and producer of several of the previous installments, Gregory Platkin moves to the director’s chair with one very simple mission: to reproduce without reinventing, repeat without reimagining. It carries on using all the same tools: fixed set-ups, heavy silences, clichéd jump scares and embarrassingly obvious plot twists until the spectacular ending final that tries to save a movie that is otherwise prefabricated. At this stage only hardcore fans will still be awake for this sad farce – which will hopefully really be the last in the series.
