New York is being terrorized by a mysterious, disfigured man who threatens to plunge the city into chaos. Wounded during an investigation, a cop named Alex finds himself in the hospital, paralyzed. There he meets Léo, an 11-year-old with a serious illness who is able to leave his body when it falls asleep. He becomes an invisible phantom, able to help Alex track down this dangerous criminal and help out Marie, an intrepid journalist…

In the wake of 2003’s successful Raining Cats and Frogs and 2010’s A Cat in Paris, Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli are back with a new adventure that is wonderfully off the wall, one that is aimed at children but works especially well for adults who still have a child in their soul. It takes place in a compelling New York, somewhere between film noir and Gotham City, which serves as the setting for an amusing investigation that is both simple and highly entertaining. The success of Phantom Boy lies in the fact that it revels in a collection of stereotypes (the good cop, the nosy journalist, the hospital-bound boy), unleashing them on an imaginative, mesmerizing story. Wonderfully light, this animated film is great fun and a nice surprise.
