Son of a winemaker, Charlie Maréchal leaves his family’s vineyard in Burgundy to become a respected enologist in Paris, the author of a bestselling guide whose ratings humble the profession every year. But Côte-d’Or, the vineyard run by his father, is in financial trouble. And so Charlie decides to return to Burgundy to learn how to make wine and save the farm, supervised by his gruff father…
Just reading the synopsis of this new movie by Jérôme Le Maire is boring enough. Le Maire’s debut was just as mediocre - the thriller Requiem pour une tueuse starring Mélanie Laurent as a contract killer. It’s hard to find even an ounce of originality or life in Premiers crus, a straightforward melodrama in which no chances are taken, no feathers are ruffled and not a hair is mussed. The movie’s four stars (Gérard Lanvin, Jalil Lespert, Laura Smet and Alice Taglioni) move through the hackneyed plot on autopilot, just as convinced as the audience that this upscale TV movie is not good enough to require a greater effort.
