Since her parents separated, Sarah and her younger sister have been living with their mother, who is in a relationship with a woman. For the two children, the situation is no stranger than any divorce that complicates the lives of everyone involved. But for others, especially for their father, this new family is problematic. Entering adolescence, Sarah questions her own sexuality, tests the limits of authority, and tries to manage this situation as best she can.

The film begins with a beautiful sequence following the 13-year-old lead character as she runs distractedly through her school. A very cinematic beginning that gently ties the audience to Sarah, who is played by the excellent Julia Lübbert – an introduction that segues into a story told through her eyes. For her debut, Chilean director Pepa San Martin demonstrates a talent for capturing a difficult childhood as she puts silence to good use. Rara’s story is actually quite ordinary, without offering anything new – it is reminiscent of The Kids Are Alright starring Julianne Moore and Annette Bening, a lighter version of the same theme. But even though there is an absence of originality and daring, the movie shines in its simplicity and subtlety.
