Los Angeles, 2002. The lives of Ray Karsten and Jess Cobb, agents of the anti-terrorist branch of the FBI, are violently disrupted when the body of Jess’s daughter is discovered in a dumpster. With the help of Assistant District Attorney Claire Sloan, Ray embarks on an obsessive investigation to find the killer. 13 years later, after years of intense research and battles against the system, Ray comes back into Jess's and Claire’s life sure that he has finally found the murderer.

Unsurprisingly, the 2009 Oscar winner for Best Film, Argentine thriller El secreto de sus ojos has gotten a Hollywood makeover as a vehicle for its Oscar-winning stars (Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman) and is directed by a good student of the genre (Billy Ray, who wrote the screenplay for The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips). Secret in Their Eyes is an odd movie: there is no false note and nothing really missing, but there is no real soul in this thriller either. The plot is interesting by not focusing on yet another mother obsessed with the pursuit of justice. But in the same way that the two actresses’ performances are a little too affected and less solid than that of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Secret in Their Eyes doesn’t really hit its target. It is never at the point of failure, but it also never manages to be a real, engaging success either.
