Sweet Girls
Stuck in overpopulated French suburban housing, 16-year-old Elodie and Marie have no hope or ambitions for their future. On the evening of their school vacation, they are told to find an internship to take control of their lives, but all they want to do is escape their tepid existence. When an old person is found in an apartment weeks after dying, they decide to take advantage of the empty flat for their vacation. Then they get a twisted idea: to kill all the old and forgotten people and take over their apartments in favor of young people, giving hope to their generation.
This movie by Jean-Paul Cardinaux and Xavier Ruiz has given life to a welcome new cinematographic universe, combining reality with everyone’s daydreams. An improbable story of two cynical teens, Sweet Girls, is nutty and colorful, with black humor that is well-delivered. A light reflection on contemporary society, in which adolescents and old people collide on the margins of “normal” peoples’ lives – excellently highlighted by the fact that faces of these normal people are never onscreen, and they seem to move at a faster pace. Although charming, the movie does have its weaknesses, especially at the end.
