The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Panem is ravaged by total civil war as the districts advance on the capital and the headquarters of President Snow. Having survived the attack by Peeta, who was tortured by the enemy until he lost his mind, Katniss decides to disobey the orders of President Coin, instead heading to the front to assassinate Snow. Accompanied by her friends and elite soldiers, she enters the capital, which is now a battlefield littered with deadly traps …

The Hunger Games has something that Twilight and Divergent do not: something to say about the world and the dystopian genre its story is set in. For this reason, the franchise adapted from the novels by Suzanne Collins and starring the sensational Jennifer Lawrence deserves a better conclusion than it gets. The fourth installment repeats the errors of its previous chapters without trying to think out of the box: syrupy dialogues try to move the story along; there is not enough tension or action; a superficial plot structure fails to take advantage of the capital’s setting (exploration, action, discussion). With only one real action scene worthy of the name (set in the sewers and reminiscent of “Aliens”) and a climax too timid to get to the heart of its subject matter, The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2 is a lost opportunity that reminds the audience that the second episode was the best.
