Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse
Returning to France after years of traveling for his anthropology career, Paul Dédalus is arrested by the police, because there is another Paul Dédalus born in the same place, on the same date, but who died two years before. This news sends him back to memories of his youth, to a mysterious trip to Russia and his encounter with Esther, the great love of his life.
In 1996’s Comment je me suis disputé… (ma vie sexuelle), Esther, played by Emmanuelle Devos, explained her painful separation from Paul Dédalus and how she regretted the moment she first kissed him at 17. Almost 2 decades later, Arnaud Desplechin is reunited with his favorite actor, Mathieu Amalric, to return to the start of this passionate love story. Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse, which was presented at the Director’s Fortnight at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, starts off like a spy movie and turns into a bittersweet teen love story. The director applies the same energy and the same strange surrealism to his actors, especially for newcomer Quentin Dolmaire. By now, audiences will either love or hate Desplechin’s old fashioned movies. Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse is therefore aimed mainly at his fans, who will be pleased by the usual charms on offer.
