Un tango más
This is the story of the two most famous dancers in the history of tango: María Nieves and Juan Carlos Copes. After falling in love with the rhythm of tango, they danced together for nearly fifty years, becoming a mythical couple in their profession worldwide. But Nieves and Copes also hated, separated, reunited and then separated again. In El Ultimo Tango, they tell their story of love and tango.
Fiction could not have done better: a man and a woman who, after falling in love with each other on the dance floor, become one of the most famous couples in tango, before tearing into one another backstage and separating. Director German Kral tells their story on two levels: with intimate interviews with the two dancers, now in their 80s; and using reconstructed scenes with actors playing the memories evoked by the couple, in an attempt to offer form to this love that is now extinct but nevertheless unforgettable. This pedantic reconstruction, which is a bit off, is not the strong point of El Ultimo Tango, which really comes alive in the eyes and words of Copes and especially Nieves: a colorful character, a soulful mix of strength and fragility, her confessions are particularly beautiful and captivating.
