We Are Your Friends
San Fernando Valley. Like his best friends Ollie, Squirrel and Mason, 23-year-old Cole dreams of a better life. He hopes to become a famous DJ, mixing in his room and going to trendy clubs as he ekes out a living as a roofer. Until he meets a superstar DJ who takes him under his wing and open doors to the golden world of clubbing…
We Are Your Friends sells dreams. And not just any dreams: those of a young man with a body like a god, with eyes the color of the ocean, and a California tan, who tries to become a turntable star and to overcome what a merciless life throws at him – only to be given a leg up by a mentor and the love of his life. We Are Your Friends is Max Joseph’s debut, which explains why this semi-drama, semi-romcom is summer fare that is as naïve as its star. The choice as leads of Zac Efron and Emily Ratajkowski, who are better known as walking fantasies than convincing thespians, doesn’t hide the modest ambitions of this bit of electro-cool fluff that wraps the plot in stylish effects to make it seem more substantial. But never mind: it works well as a feel-good movie and has a soundtrack that tempts the audience into a California beach vacation. It is an hour and a half as dumb as it is sweet.
