Bridget Jones's Baby
Celebrating her 43th birthday alone, Bridget Jones decides take charge of her life again. After years of being focused on her career in television, which led to a prestigious position, she approaches her love life more lightly to escape social pressure. And so she meets Jack Qwant, a businessman who got rich thanks to an algorithm that is supposed to solve the mystery of relationships. She is also reunited with Mark Darcy, the love of her life, who is now divorced. Then she discovers she is pregnant. And the big question is: who’s the father?
Bridget Jones’ Baby Baby is certainly not as bad as its predecessor, The Age of Reason. But is it a good romantic comedy? No. It’s a little sad to see Renée Zellweger return to her famous role fifteen years later, again opposite Colin Firth, for yet another round of resolutions, sentimental chaos and slapstick gags based on Helen Fielding’s bestseller. The laughs are cheap, the script is phoned in and the gags are hackneyed. Like the characters, the actors seem to replay the same scenes in the same way, with less of an element of surprise. Sure to entertain singleton fans, especially thanks to the appearance of the impeccable Emma Thompson (who was called in to doctor the script - an indication of how bad it must have been in the first place). But that does not make a successful film, even in the category of romantic comedy.
