David Lynch: The Art Life

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A portrait of one of the most enigmatic filmmakers of his generation. From his idyllic childhood in a small American town to the dark streets of Philadelphia, Lynch takes us on an intimate journey punctuated by the hypnotic narrative of his younger years. By combining Lynch's visual and musical works with his amazing experiences, the film unveils the unexplored areas of a totally singular universe.

First, a surprise: seeing David Lynch deliver himself up so simply and clearly. Odd, considering this is the mysterious filmmaker of Mulholland Drive, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and Elephant Man, who had moved away from the spotlight, more or less retiring from the cinema (he subsequently agreed to return for Season 3 of Twin Peaks, currently being broadcast). His house, his daughter, his childhood, part of his secret garden are offered up to viewers, or rather to fans. Because this documentary by Jon Nguyen, Rick Barnes and Olivia Neergaard-Holm is meant for the director's admirers. Only fans will see this film as an opportunity to investigate the Lynch mystery – and be doomed to get lost again, because this mystery cannot be solved. Regular viewers may find the documentary a little flat, even boring.
