Philippe de Chauveron hit it big in 2014 with Serial (Bad) Weddings (aka “Serial (Bad) English Titles”), which attracted over 12 million viewers to movie theatres. It was a miracle for the director of Ducoboo and other minor comedies that went unnoticed. De Chauveron unsurprisingly tries to ride the wave of that success by reuniting with his Weddings co-stars (Ary Abittan and Medi Sadoun) in this comedy that addresses the evils of our century (undocumented migrants, racism). Unfortunately, it’s a painful ride based on a well-worn formula. From gags about foreign accents and homosexuality, to slapstick and caricatured performances, this movie sinks to new lows in popular comedy, more concerned with the distraction of its exotic settings (Malta, Lampedusa) than with trying to go for actual laughs.
