From a large, rich diamond family, Pier Ulmann leads a life of petty crime in Paris, where he profits from his unusual abilities to carry out burglaries with his friend Rachid. When he learns his father has been killed, he returns to Antwerp, where he is considered the black sheep of the clan. Seeking vengeance, Pier accepts a cousin’s offer to renovate the family firm’s offices, planning a heist with Rachid. But his task gets increasingly complicated as he tries to carry it out...
This debut by Arthur Harari won’t leave you unmoved. From the start it is extremely stylized and bloody, with distinct personality, strength and strangeness. The unusual face of Niels Schneider, also seen in Xavier Dolan’s Heartbeats, forms the core of this thriller, which manipulates the codes of the genre and aims to inject a striking eccentricity. The attempt to make the movie into a great tragedy leaves it mannered, affected, tending towards a cold exercise in style, and sometimes hollow. But for all its formal qualities and occasional faults, Dark Inclusion marks the arrival of a director to look out for: Arthur Harari.
