Dounia lives in a slum. With an irresponsible mother and limited prospects, she dreams of only one thing: a different life, with money and success. Ready to do anything to achieve this, she turns to Rebecca, a drug dealer who is respected in the neighborhood. With her friend Maimouna, Dounia embarks on a new life...
Together with Toni Erdmann, this was one of the best movies of Cannes 2016, sidelining the usual heavyweights and superstars of the competition: Divines, the debut of Houda Benyamina, received the Golden Camera award. On paper, Divines resembles Girlhood by Celine Sciamma, which received attention in 2014: the same character trajectory, uninhibited feminism, modern lightness, and unknown actresses with fabulous faces. Less cool, less pop, this movie is also more controlled, tighter and clearer, as well as brighter, noisier and invigorating. Wonderful performances by Oulaya Amamra, Deborah Lukumuena and Jisca Kalvanda make this movie a success.
