Gods of Egypt
In an alternate Egypt, the gods live among men. Gold flows in their veins, and the people fear and admire these overpowering creatures who are able to transform into animals. While humans gather to witness the coronation of Horus by his father Osiris, the Machiavellian Seth murders his brother the king and exiles his opponent. The kingdom is now in chaos. But thanks to the intervention of Bek, a human thief, Horus is released and returns to confront his uncle in an unprecedented war, where he will face incredible enemies.
In the 90’s he made great movies like The Crow and Dark City, followed by lesser fare like I, Robot and Knowing in the 2000s. Now director Alex Proyas has sunk to the bottom of the pile with Gods of Egypt, an awful mishmash of pseudo-mythology and trashy science-fiction, with a tab of 140 million. So bad it’s almost good, so gaudy it’s almost charming, this story about gods as rock stars doesn’t stick to any rules and is incredibly tasteless. Go see it only if you like the idea of a terrible mash-up of 300 (also starring 1-note-wonder Gerard Butler) and Star Wars remixed as a video game and released as a wannabe blockbuster.
