Going in Style
Retirees Willie, Joe and Al have been friends for years. They worked at the same company that has now gone under, taking their pensions with it. For the three pals, who lead a very modest existence, this spells catastrophe. But when Joe witnesses a robbery, he sees it as a solution to their troubles: they should rob the local bank and recover the money due to them...
Going in Style is a remake of the 1979 comedy starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg. But it has more significance as the new film by Zach Braff, an early favorite of American independent cinema thanks to his 2004 effort Garden State. After a few years work in the successful sitcom Scrubs, he returned with the less convincing Wish I Was Here in 2014, and now continues the downward trend with this light comedy. The fault lies in a lazy script, an unoriginal plot, and an excessive use of music to prop up ordinary dialogue. Going in Style is soon forgotten. Without Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman or Alan Arkin, who bring tenderness and melancholy to their work, this movie would not be worth watching at all. As it stands, it’s sometimes touching, but never more than impersonal and formulaic.
