L'économie du couple
After fifteen years of marriage, with a home and two daughters, Marie and Boris decide to separate. Love has given way to hatred, contempt and anger as they live together with their children, who are witnesses to their battles. As the days go by, their disputes, rebukes, and what remains of their love gradually disappear.
Berenice Bejo already played half of a couple in crisis in The Past, the magnificent film by Asghar Farhadi that earned her a Best Actor Award at Cannes. She takes on the subject again in After Love, co-starring with Cédric Kahn in this conjugal duel that takes place mainly behind closed doors. The couple’s home becomes both the theater of their war and their own prison, as they tear down all that united them in the past. Within this false simplicity, After Love is certainly the best movie by Joachim Lafosse (Private Lessons, Our Children) – it is perfectly written, rhythmic, balanced, drawing a vivid portrait of a modern couple with exceptional honesty and sensitivity.
