Sent to Anatolia by the European Community, Ozan, a French teacher of Turkish decent, arrives in a small village of Crimean Tatars, in the middle of the desert under a blazing sun. As the village is suffering from a water shortage that has led people to haggle with a wholesaler ready to seize their land, an unusual project is born that involves planting a vineyard in the dry soil. Ozan supports this crazy initiative of the mayor of the village, which gives new life to the community...

Grapes of Hope is a Turkish feel-good movie reminiscent (intentionally or not) of The Source by Radu Mihaileanu and Where Do We Go Now? by Nadine Labaki, which were released in sequence in the fall of 2011. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. Director Bay Okan brings together all the necessary ingredients and finds the ideal setting for such sweet little optimistic fable, but this movie, inspired by The Turtles by Fakir Baykurt, is not really entertaining nor does it have the necessary sensitivity to be a good comedy. This is most likely due to the frozen staging and a script that is too bland, with the result being artificial and forced .The Grapes of Hope fails in its mission to be a pleasant diversion in disguise dealing with hard reality.
