Far from overcrowded Earth, the Avalon is taking 5000 passengers to the distant planet Homestead II, with plans to colonize it. But after a collision with an asteroid that causes a lot of damage to the huge ship, Jim Preston is pulled from his artificial sleep 90 years before his scheduled awakening. Alone on board and contemplating his inevitable death before reaching his destination, he decides to wake up another passenger: Aurora, with whom he gradually falls in love. His decision brings many consequences, especially since the effect on the Avalon is far more serious than he suspects...

Passengers is pure Hollywood studio formula: two superstars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in a love story that is also an action/science fiction movie, with a few visually striking sequences (a spacewalk, an amazing pool). The result is a flashy product that rings hollow: two hours focusing mainly on a love story that is both dumb and dubious (Aurora as the victim of Jim's pseudo-pure obsession), which ends directly in a very artificial series of explosions, special effects and heroic bits. There is absolutely nothing remarkable nor really disagreeable about this project, which is quickly consumed and forgotten.
