After many years of downturn, the great and prestigious theater of Buster Moon the koala falls into disuse as the debts mount up. An eternal optimist, Buster decides to go for broke: he organizes a singing contest for a big show with new talent. This attracts a self-absorbed mouse, a housewife pig, a punk porcupine, a very young elephant and a young gorilla all try their luck, forming an explosive group that is full of surprises ...
The animation studio Illumination Entertainment is moving on up: just a few months after the successful The Secret Life of Pets, Sing comes to theatres with the aim of entertaining all ages. Its simple and effective selling point: animals that sing and dance. Reminiscent of Zootopia, the last Disney production, which was also set in a city populated by hyperactive animals. Unfortunately, the first animated film by Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Son of Rambow) suffers in comparison, as its world is much not as funny or off-beat. The are less jokes, adventures, or surprises; this animated movie rests too much on its musical numbers to offer a memorable show.
