Following a terrifying vision of a demonic nun and the death of her husband, Lorraine decides to stop using her gifts to protect them. A year later, however, the couple agrees to go to London to help a family who has been attacked by a demon that has taken possession of a child...
Despite its phenomenal success, which helped launch the mediocre spin-off Annabelle about an evil doll, The Conjuring by James Wan was never anything more than an unimaginative horror movie about exorcism. The sequel seems therefore to have nothing better to offer: new home, new family, new demon, same story. It is therefore surprising that this sequel is captivating with its seventies atmosphere, the strong presence of Vera Farmiga, and especially Wan’s mise en scene. The director of Insidious and Furious 7 uses the very familiar horror film setting to orchestrate a handful of memorable, perfectly directed scenes. If the script and the secondary characters had received the same energy, Conjuring 2 would offer more than just thrills. As it stands, it’s more fun than the first one.
