Two years after her divorce from Tom (Justin Theroux) the depressed alcoholic Rachel (Emily Blunt) rides the train into Manhattan and back every day. During her commute, out of the window, she watches Megan (Haley Bennett) and Scott (Luke Evans), the seemingly perfect couple that lives only a few doors down from her Ex and his new wife Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). One day, Rachel sees Megan kissing another man from her train window. An act, that turns her world upside down.

The Girl on the Train is the film version of Paula Hawkings' successful novel. Director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) is adhering to the structure of the non-linear narrative of the source material, while not offering much stylistically and visually to clarify the story. It is told from the point of view of the three female protagonists, but aside from Rachel, Megan and Anna's characters are barely developed and it is often difficult for the audience to figure out the motivations for their actions. However, Emily Blunt's skill as an actress saves the film from drifting into oblivion.
