Saved by the panther Bagheera, Mowgli is raised by a wolf pack and watched over by Raksha. Because he has never seen anything other than the jungle, the child lives like a wolf, in a community governed by laws that ensure peace between species. But when the dreaded Shere Khan returns, the balance is broken: wounded by a man, the tiger promises that he will kill Mowgli, who has no place among animals. To save him, Bagheera takes Mowgli on a long journey to civilization, which is the only place that can protect him ...

It’s better to not remember too much of the classic Disney version to enjoy this new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's book, this time directed by blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2). Closer to the cult cartoon (although it differs in some places) than the original source material, The Jungle Book is a stunning explosion that seem like a demo-tape for the latest special effects (the rendering of the many animals is often impressive). Nothing succeeds like excess in this family flick, which aims to delight the young (a few silly animals and compelling songs) and captivate the young-at-heart (much epic, noisy scenes). Thus again demonstrating that Favreau is not big on innovation, but has lots of expertise in mainstream mass production.

Visually the movie is quite impressive and beautiful.
However, it feels too short and is too fast paced.
Another hour added to the movie would have allowed for a deeper character- and story-development.

But even so, it was an enjoyable experience nonetheless.
