Tennis was at the heart of Borg vs. McEnroe, which came out a few weeks ago, and it’s back in Battle of the Sexes. Except here, the movie isn't just about tennis. Instead, the feature film by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris uses tennis as a medium to comment on political and profoundly topical issues. Although the legendary match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs took place in 1972, the film has a particularly strong impact in our time, by emphasizing the role of women in our society in the midst of the Weinstein affair and commenting on machismo, gender equality and sexuality. Battle of the Sexes succeeds in being timeless. Far from being heavy-handed, the movie knows exactly when to stop and let the sport entertain the spectators in a dazzling climax. Carried by the excellent Emma Stone, who should win at least one Oscar nomination for her performance, and Steve Carell hamming it up like he does so well, Battle of the Sexes is a sports and political must-see.
