Director Marc Webb returns to his roots. In the wake of his big-budget The Amazing Spider-Man, which was so “memorable” there had to be a reboot, he is back working with small budgets in line with his first film, 500 days together with two productions shot back-to-back: Gifted and The Only Living Boy in New York. The first stars Chris Evans, who is taking a break away from his adventures as Captain America. It’s a typical Hollywood underdog story about a gifted little girl whose uncle is trying to raise her as best he can, spiced with humor and tearful moments – all engineered to trigger the right emotions. What may have been formulaic is actually decent, thanks to good performances by the actors, a peppy soundtrack and good work done by the screenwriter and director. A charming feel-good movie.
