Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Now perfectly integrated into the Kingsman, the British intelligence elite in three-piece suits, Gary Unwin alias Eggsy discovers the existence of a mysterious new enemy, the Golden Circle, which dominates the drug trade and is led by the strange Poppy Adams. When she destroys Kingsman headquarters and attacks its agents, Eggsy and Merlin have no choice but to go to the United States and join forces with their American counterparts, the Statesman. Together, they try to stop Poppy, who has devised a plan to emerge on the public stage...

Although 2014’s Kingsman was greatly popular by masking its superficiality and lack of originality with humor, action, a bit of madness and effective irony, the sequel probably will not do as well. More actors, more money and more noise: Kingsman: The Golden Circle carefully applies its little formula again, stacking up cool on every level: Channing Tatum as a cowboy, Jeff Bridges as head cowboy, Halle Berry in nerd glasses, Julianne Moore as a sociopath, and even Colin Firth, who is brought back from the dead. Convinced that more is better, Matthew Vaughn aims this adventure at the fans of the first. But the surprise effect is no longer there, and this endless movie (2:21) is flawed. Too much intrigue, too many characters, too many cultural references, too many directorial tics (awful shots that don’t flow, slow motion scenes); the movie is so obsessed with being cool that it manages the opposite.
