Seeing Taika Waititi at the helm of a Marvel feature is great news. The New Zealand director, who found fame with “What We Do in the Shadows”, has a style and humor that is very far from those of regular studios, and this choice testifies to Marvel’s desire to give the franchise a jolt in the wake of two moderately convincing Thor episodes. Thor: Ragnarok utilizes a colossal amount of energy to do this: the superhero now lives in an ultra-colorful universe, with a lightheartedness that breaks with the somewhat seriousness of the two previous films. Any similarity with The Guardians of the Galaxy, the 90’s Marvel that shared the same style, is not a coincidence. The pros of this movie are its visual ambitions, exciting scenery, a generous serving of humor, and a particular care given to details. Still, the formula (a hero has to save the world from a very nasty villain) remains bland and simple, lacking emotion and nuance. What remains is a very beautiful spectacle for the eyes, but there’s not much for the mind.
