Cult phenomenon
Nicknamed «the Citizen Kane of bad movies», an American indie is becoming the cult event of the 21st century.
The Prince Charles cinema, an independent London theatre famous for its weekly «Rocky Horror Picture Show» sing-along sessions, during which audience participation is a given, is offering an American indie dud a monthly midnight screening in the same style. Absurd plot points, flat dialogue, serious mise-en-scène issues and the painful lack of acting talent have earned «The Room», originally devised as a romantic tragedy, an unwilling cult comedy status.
The phenomenon launched in Los Angeles, where repeat viewers went as far as throwing plastic spoons at the screen – the piece of cutlery featuring heavily in the film.
