Despite her husband being released from prison (*Channing Tatum*) after four years behind bars, Emily (*Rooney Mara*) still battles depression and suicidal tendencies. She tries to take her life by driving into a wall at top speed. Emily is then assigned a psychiatrist (*Jude Law*) who works at the ER and decides to take her on as a regular patient, prescribing for her a new and revolutionary antidepressant. After rediscovering, for the first time in a long time, her libido, her appetite and a taste for life, Emily seems also to be a victim of side effects. But is she really sick?
