What Maisie Knew
Drama about a little girl whose life is changed drastically by her parent’s divorce – starring Julianne Moore.
The life of seven-year-old Maisie (Onata Aprile) is torn apart when her mother Susanna (Julianne Moore) and her father Beale (Steve Coogan) decide to get a divorce. Neither wants to give her up. Maisie watches her parents battle for custody without choosing a side. The affection Maisie needs she finds not from her parents, but from their new partners, whose relationship with her brings them closer to each other.
Henry James' original novel was written in 1897, causing controversy with its then-new idea of shared child custody. After being adapted for film in the 1960’s and 70’s, co-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel and screenwriters Nancy Doyne and Carroll Cartwright have updated the story. Although it contains slight weaknesses, the overall movie offers a very poignant view of a subject that is still very current.
