Barney's Version
The tumultuous loves of a politically incorrect Jewish TV producer who travels between Montreal and Rome in the 1970's and 80's.
The son of a cop obsessed by sex, Barney is a Canadian-Jewish TV producer who spent part of his youth during the 1970's in Rome with his best friends, a group of hard-drugging artists. A cynical drinker who loves a cigar and ice hockey, Barney is no fan of social graces, falling for his 3rd wife during his 2nd wedding. But then he is suspected of murder and his mental health starts to decline...
Adapted from the best-seller by Canadian writer Mordecai Richler, Barney's Version is a great comedy rich in disenchanted Jewish humor. The reconstitution of 70's Rome and 80's Montreal is especially successful, with powerfully touching performances by Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti as father and son. With cameos by noted Canadian directors David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan and Denys Arcand.
