Socialisme
Experimental documentary and philosophical dissertation by Nouvelle Vague legend Jean-Luc Godard.
Scenes on a Mediterranean cruise ship, snatches of images and sounds intercut with an abrupt series of quotes and aphorisms that mainly remain enigmatic (about "bastards" who have become "sincere" and "Hollywood invented by Jews"....). Europe is falling apart, Africa has been abandoned by "The West", and the world is a place of suffering and endless disillusionment. The filmmaker's melancholy comes through, but the rest of the film is not really accessible.
A dense, elliptical poetic essay so hard to digest that the only viewers still awake after 30 minutes will be those eagerly jotting down all of Jean-Luc Godard's quotations. For die-hard fans only.
