An international peace-keeping agency recruits a team of superheroes to save the planet from destruction.

Loki (Tom Hiddleston), an evil, megalomaniacal extra-terrestrial who is jealous of his adopted brother Thor, is out to destroy the human race to appease his bruised ego. So he steals a magic cube that gives him the unlimited power of a god. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the director of SHIELD, an international peace-keeping agency, recruits a team of superheroes to defend the planet: Steve Rogers, alias Captain America (Chris Evans) the Black Widow (the delicious Scarlett Johansson as a redhead), Dr. Bruce Banner, alias the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Tony Stark, alias Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hawkeye, the infallible archer (Jeremy Renner) and Thor, the Nordic god of thunder (Chris Hemsworth). Will they be able to get past their internal rivalries in order to find the cube and defeat the forces of evil?

This action flick by Joss Whedon, based on the Marvel comic of the same name first released in 1963, reunites onscreen for the first time superheroes who have until now have had their own movies. Of special note are the cold one-liners dealt out by the heroes, a big scene in which the SHIELD space ship is repaired and one where a huge monster appears in the midst of New York skyscrapers. Explosive battles, a plethora of special effects and pyrotechnical feats to which 3D adds absolutely nothing will excite fans of the genre, who won't be deterred by this silly movie's general vacuousness.

Great action, great directing and very funny script - well worth seeing at least twice so you can pick up all the lines you missed the first time because you were in fits of laughter.
