Molière à bicyclette France 2013 – 102min.
Movie Rating
Alceste à bicyclette
An actor tries to convince a colleague to play Molière again on stage. Starring Fabrice Lucchini and Lambert Wilson.
Serge has been retired from the theater for three years, tired of the hypocrisy that goes with the job. He lives like a recluse in his broken-down family home on Ile de Ré. One day he gets a surprise visit from one of his former colleagues. At the summit of his career and the star of a successful television series, Gauthier dreams of playing Molière's Misanthrope. But knowing that no one will offer him the role, he decides to produce the play himself and tries to convince Serge to participate in the project. Serge turns him down at first, but leaves the door open to getting the starring role of Alceste by not giving Gauthier a definitive answer. Over the course of five days, the two rehearse the play, engage in verbal sparring in alexandrine verse and both fight over the same woman...
Once the pleasure of watching Fabrice Lucchini declaiming Molière's verse has passed, all that's left is a screenplay as bland as the salty marshes of Ile de Ré in low season, leaving viewers reluctantly immersed in the pompous microcosm of egocentric actors and their endless quest to be in the spotlight.
