La ritournelle
The wife of a Norman farmer goes to Paris in search of experiences she has missed in her dismal life on the farm.
In deepest Normandy on a cattle farm, Brigitte is quietly bored at the side of her husband Xavier, who loves working with his animals. When their neighbor’s house is invaded by young Parisians for a party, she meets Stan, a hot 30-year-old who reminds her of the life she hasn’t lived. A few days later, she decides to go off alone to the capital, lying to Xavier so he won’t follow her. Without being quite sure of herself, she departs on her adventure...
Marc Fitoussi alternates his muses: in the wake of two films with Sandrine Kiberlain, he has gone back to Isabelle Huppert, the heroine of Copacabana, for this funny rereading of city mouse, country mouse. With a mix of social reality and pure fantasy, La Ritournelle starts of like a tasty comedy with witty dialogue (the encounter with the police) before segueing into a tender love story in the second part. Less off-the-wall than Pauline détective, the director gives free reign to Isabelle Huppert, who is absolutely irresistible as the bumpkin in a fur hat.
