Five people are forced to help one another to survive in this sequel to “The Purge”.

Every year, the US offers its citizens the opportunity to go with its most basic instincts during a night of terror and violence where everyone is on their own: this is The Purge. Through a twist of fate, five people are forced to help one another in the face of a common enemy: a separating couple stuck downtown when their car breaks down; a mother and her daughter attacked at home by masked assailants; and a policeman determined to seek revenge on the person who killed his son.

It’s hard to do worse than the first installment, which was a typical example of a horror flick with a great idea ruined by a ridiculous script. But despite its B-movie feel, The Purge: Anarchy is somewhat better than its predecessor, mainly because instead of shutting the audience into a home with one family, it goes outside where the city is being ravaged by the multitudes. Nevertheless, this sequel doesn’t escape the weaknesses of this type of exercise, bearing witness – as did the first – the producers’ inability to explore the depths of their very dark concept. Which leaves us with the impression of watching a likeable but innocent TV movie.
