Yalom's Cure

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Personal documentary about Irvin D. Yalom, who is very respected in the world of psychoanalysis, has sold millions of books around the world and attracts thousands to his conferences. Sabine Gisiger closely films the life of this 80-year-old, that of his wife and children, capturing his reflections on human existence and his perception of human relations.

Yalom’s Cure hits a wall: a passionate subject does not make a passionate film. Because she films Irvin D. Yalom’s great declarations on life, the confessions of his wife and children on his personality and his past, and uses archival images with undeniable cachet, director Sabine Gisiger seems convinced she is able to capture the man behind the image. Unfortunately, Yalom’s Cure quickly becomes a sequence of the professor’s tirades, literary formulas and references to Kant and Dostoyevsky. She never manages to bring his words all the way to the audience, who gets bored despite the interest some of the subjects he approaches may hold.
