Brooklyn, New York. Former hitman for his best friend and mob boss Shawn Maguire, Jimmy Conlon has put down his weapons and is leading a sad, lonely existence, left with only his conscience and the bottle. He is estranged from his son Mike, a family man with an ordered life who has never forgiven Jimmy for his absence. But when Mike becomes witness to a crime committed by Maguire’s unstable son Danny, he is threatened. Jimmy turns up to help Mike and is forced to face his old demons, as they try to survive the night together.
These days, Liam Neeson’s career seems to rest on a simple algorithm: a threatened child, suppressed warrior skills, latent alcoholism and a dark past. At this stage, that’s all we get. His third collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra after the boring Unknown and the entertaining Non-Stop, gives the impression that the actor, who hasn’t bothered to change costumes from one movie to the next, has entered a cynical phase with this new variation on Taken. Everything is done by rote: the direction, the inevitable 3D effects, the stereotypical screenplay, resulting in a bland, boring run from the mob in the night. At least there is Ed Harris to give the exercise a hint of legitimacy, but mainly this movie is only for the most diehard fans of Liam Neeson.

Sie handeln mit Heroin, hängen an verwandtschaftlichen Beziehungen und schießen erst bevor sie fragen. Die beiden Alten sind Jugendfreunde: Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) und Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris). Jimmy ist kaputt und pleite, Shawn hilft ihm über Wasser zu bleiben. Erst als ihre Söhne Mike Conlon (Joel Kinnaman) und Danny Maguire (Boyd Holbrook) aneinandergeraten und Danny erschossen wird, werden sie zu unerbittlichen Feinden. Familienehre contra Männerfreundschaft. Frauen spielen hier keine große Rolle.
Es wird eine Gewaltlawine losgetreten, in der alle bis auf Mike ihr Leben verlieren. Die Spannung kommt von den endlosen Ballereien und dem aus dem Weg räumen von Gegnern. Ein Prinzip trägt bis zum Ende. Dann wird die emotionale Notbremse gezogen und Freund und Freund, Vater und Sohn richten sich gegenseitig hin. Man traut Liam Neeson mit seinem ehrlichen Gesicht diese Brutalität gar nicht zu. Er versucht als Großvater zu punkten, als sein Sohn ihn draußen vor der Tür im Regen stehen lässt. Auch Altstar Ed Harris kommt anfangs ehrenhaft daher. Doch alle Figuren sind hier kriminell bis auf Mike, der auch zu einem geordneten Leben zurückkehrt. Er war halt nur zur falschen Zeit am falschen Ort. Vielleicht ist er es der die ganze Nacht laufen muss. Vater und Vaters Freund können es nicht mehr. Ist der Sinn hier die sinnfreie Spannung, die von Brutalität angetrieben wird? Oder ist es der vergebliche Versuch des Vaters, Jimmy, sich für seinen Sohn Mike zu opfern?
