The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
All is well in Bikini Bottom for the eternal optimist SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends: Patrick the trusty starfish, Squidward the egotistical octopus, Sandy the squirrel and Mr. Krabs, the crustacean obsessed with money! But everything goes wrong when the Krabby Patty formula is stolen by the evil pirate Burger Beard! To save their world, SpongeBob and his friends (even his nemesis Plankton) team up and come to ours! Transformed into superheroes, they come to terms with their new powers… which is sure to make waves!
SpongeBob SquarePants returns in this wacky comedy ten years after the first movie. Directed by Paul Tibbitt, who wrote, directed and produced no less than 155 episodes of the popular children’s cartoon, this installment unfortunately makes no sense at all, thanks to its rambling plot. The 3D effects (now obligatory for an animated kids’ movie), and the plot device that takes the characters on land, turn out to be bets that were too risky. The essence that makes SpongeBob who he is disappears behind the director’s personal frenzy. In contrast to the TV episodes, the gags in the movie are throw-away and have nothing to do with the narrative. Given that the TV show debuted in 1999 and is still in production (on Nickelodeon) – a rare thing in itself – it’s clear why a movie would be profitable. And it is: in American box office receipts, it’s even ahead of Jupiter Ascending, the intergalactic blockbuster starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. But while the kiddies may not notice its lack of quality, long-time fans will be very disappointed...
