Japan, 17th century. While the country has banned Catholicism and priests are forbidden to enter the country, Jesuit priests Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe learn that their mentor, Father Ferreira, has renounced his faith. Unable to accept it, they go looking for him, aware of the dangers they will face. They arrive in a country in full upheaval where Christians are relentlessly pursued...

For two decades, Martin Scorsese planned to adapt the eponymous novel by Shūsaku Endō, which recalls the central place that faith has in his movies. After a series of more or less easy projects that were within his comfort zone (Shutter Island, Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street), the filmmaker returns with a more daring approach, which is all the more remarkable given that "Silence" is a conventional movie. Scorsese's camera disappears behind the spiritual quest and deep questions of his priests, played by Adam Driver (the new Stars Wars villain) and the excellent Andrew Garfield. Silence is neither easy nor pleasant, but it is nonetheless fascinating and important for the director's career.
