Woody Allen's ex-muse hopes to get the international media's attention to raise awareness for the human disaster in Darfur, Sudan.

Mia Farrow: hunger strike

In her column on the world's best blog, The Huffington Post, Mia Farrow says she will start her strike on April 27 by drinking only water.

The actress goes on to explain that since March 4, when the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes that have cost 35,000 non-Arabs their lives, the country's situation has worsened.

In answer to the warrant, al-Bashir ordered 13 charity organizations, including Save the Children, Médecins sans Frontières, CARE, Oxfam and The International Rescue Committee, to leave the country.

According to the UN, the forced expulsion of the NGOs could have dramatic consequences for the region: by May, around one million people will be deprived of food, medicine and drinking water.

More than 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been deported since the beginning of the conflict in Darfur. The Islamist Sudanese junta, which took over the government in a coup in 1989, hotly contests the genocide and these numbers.
